Scene from a book

Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will have created an image that recreates a scene from a book. This poster will capture and convey the mood of the scene as well as tell a small part of the story.
The project will be aligned with the Academic Lesson Plan’s skills of relate and apply, synthesis, and critical thinking.


Assignment
Students will create a mindmap using the Visual Understanding Environment software
, that identifies three different aspects of the scene. Their map should be at least 2 levels deep with 3 arms at the least. Students should think about mood of the scene the and the genre of the book. For example one branch could be as such:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone→Fantasy→Bright and well lit
vs.

Twilight→teen vampire romance→dark and moody, select lighting

Using Adobe Photoshop students will create an 8 1/2” x 11” image . The image will convey the mood, emotion and story of the scene.

Requirements
Design brief
  • There must be a clear theme and message within the image.
    • Written in a one paragraph summary, or statement, that explains their scene, what the mood is and objective of the project.
    • This statement will explain the reasons for the placement of objects within the image.
    • There should not be any elements within the image that does not have a reason for being there.

  • Three sketches of the image design, a quarter sheet in size.
  • You must take pictures of any humans in the scene.
    • Animals and far off locations can be downloaded.

  • The final image and the map will be uploaded to the class wiki by the stated due dates.


Grading
The statements, mind map, and final project will be graded based on the completeness of the projects, ability to meet deadlines, and the attention to detail. Failure to meet the full expectations of the project will see the grade of the components of the project receiving less that full credit.
